In the past week of darkness and despair there has been some talk of creating a Brothel King Discord server. I figured we could continue that talk over here.

Why am I calling it semi-official?
Why is Brothel King's community here as a guest on the forum of another h-game in the first place? Goldo wants to spend as much time as possible on the game, instead of on moderating a community.

On top of that, Discord is not very privacy-friendly compared to this forum. You can't access the information on it without registering an account. And if you try to use an account in a secure browser or behind a VPN, it will instantly block you and demand a phone number (I know burner numbers exist, but the point is that it's a hassle to "privately" use discord)

For those reasons, Goldo is unlikely to be involved in this discord community. I'm not sure how active I would be in it either, and some other long-term community members might feel the same way. But despite that, it's likely still a good idea:

• To have a safe haven for the community to flee to if the forum ever goes down again
• To have an up to date backup of all the most important things (links to files, utilities, girlpacks, mods, etc)
• To have a more immediate chatroom/hangout experience that a forum can't offer
• To reach and accommodate a different audience that prefers using Discord over ancient forum technology

So the point of this thread is basically to ask for volunteers who would like to establish and run this server, if there is enough interest in it.

Just to clarify, I'm not dead set against Discord or obsessing over using TOR to access it or whatnot, it's just that I'd rather not give any real-world info to create a burner account on Discord and my understanding (might be wrong) was that that wasn't an option.

From my experience, a phone number is only needed if Discord thinks your account is suspicious. And your account becomes suspicious as soon as you do things that make you more anonymous:

• Your account is suspicious if you try to use it through your browser instead of through the app
• Your account is suspicious if you use a VPN (or travel around a lot while using it)

If you use the app and don't shield fingerprints that can be used to identify you from Discord, you won't be very suspicious and won't need a phone number. As soon as your account is marked as suspicious, you're completely locked out of it until you've verified it with a phone number.

I am not much of a discord guru and not really online enough to run a server I think.

I still think it's a good idea if someone made one to bring awareness to the project, as the expectation nowadays is to have a discord and it will be the first thing people look for.
Maybe just having the links and some basic troubleshooting info there might be enough?

or maybe we can hijack the hhs discord server. i mean we already do that with the forum so might as well right?

Ok so I found my way onto the HHS discord. I had to fill out a dozen Captcha and got my account disabled once randomly but it now works in the browser and without personal info.

I think I prefer the forum but it could be nice to have both, if only as a backup.

For what it's worth, I won't be on any Discord. For reasons of privacy, the stream-of-consciousness format itself and Discord being another faceless machine-administered entity like Youtube or one of the scrolling addiction sites - but worse.

I've already seen the second-hand effects of the moderation machine disassembling a game's community, and that was a perfectly normal one, if a bit niche. Everybody even vaguely affiliated with the people who ran it got the boot, and the main person moving things along actually went back to exclusively forum format. BK is obviously much more risque.


I'd also like to point out that F95 itself is a much more visible medium than any incarnation of HHS, and that hasn't led to a lot of new blood coming in and staying. I suspect a Discord is going to be more or less the same, and not the kind of community we once had, and still possess a small shadow of.


I may, of course, be entirely wrong and too set in my forumite ways.

Even before joining the conversation, I already understood what the main concerns were going to be about when making a discord server, and everything that has been discussed in this post so far has been clearly valid, 100%.  So, to address these issues I think what neronero stated in his first post, perfectly sums it up. "A server that is semi-official". And with some small tweaks here and there, it will be a good asset to the community with no risks whatsoever, and in the worst case, be "cutoff", if need be.  In other words, you could think of the server more as an extra storage facility that requires minimal management and only requires minimal changes between long periods of time. So with this in mind...

Some ideas I have for the server with considerations to the issues everyone has listed so far, Here are some goals I believe we should achieve with the creation of a server.

1. Create a small group of moderators (preferably three) who all simultaneously own the server and can moderate it (doesn't have to be regularly)
2. Have a few threads for light discussion of the topics related to the game.
3. Is disconnected from any integral parts of the community, such as (HHH, f95zone, etc.)
4. Keeps guidelines to inform everyone on the main function of the server and can be a sort of indirect gateway to the forums.
5. Is accessible by goldo anonymously, lol.

I think that these are some of the main goals, and obviously there are probably a few other things that should be done before a discord server is actually setup, but this should serve as a general outline based on what I think the server should entail, which should be it.

Also, if anyone wants to volunteer, announce it in the thread, and hopefully by then goldo's discord is actually working, lmao

Personally I like Discord. I use it through a VPN and never had to enter my phone number. I know that a few other adult visual novels use Discord and never had problem with it, even posting lewd pictures. I think only loli or celebrities packs would cause concern with Discord policies (but I'm no lawyer).

For the subject of visibility, I think the opposite of JMan. Forums are old tech, it reminds me of my high school years People, for better or for worse, are now on social media, including Discord. From the post of JMan I understand that the community seems to dwindle. If Goldo want to reverse the trend, my recommendation would be to go with Discord or Reddit (but I'm less familiar with their T&C, even if I know they have adult stuff).

I know I'm kinda fresh around here, but if the Discord project goes forward, I can offer you my help. I have experience in creating and managing servers.

This is not really the crux of the problem, at least as far as I'm concerned. It's more that the old guard is largely gone, and there are few people if any who'd fill their shoes.

_neronero is more or less the only one almost as active as they used to be. Chris and Leortha have faded away in the last few years, I'm just fucking around and fooling myself about the past coming back, A&O and Kite80 are more or less retired, the few new modders/pack makers who have done good work (EarliestBird, Vaan, sjeongjin, MCLover) haven't become permanent members of the community, that French 'no care bears' guy whose moniker escapes me at the moment hasn't even resurfaced (I think?), etc. Never mind the pre-0.14 people like OhWee or Maxxronoa.

And I don't think Discord will be able to do anything about that. It might do other positive things - although I'm somewhat sceptical. A guy tried to resurrect another adult mod of mine via Discord a while back, and reportedly it was a ghost town (never went there myself).

But if you want to help and try, by all means go ahead. It'd probably be a different community, though. And one I'm not much interested in.
